What is PIP?

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for people who need extra help because of a long-term illness or disability. It has two components:

  1. Daily Living: For help with everyday tasks.
  2. Mobility: For help with getting around.

PIP Rates for 2024/2025

As of April 8, 2024, PIP rates increased by 6.7% to keep up with inflation. Here are the new weekly rates:

Daily Living Component:

  • Enhanced Rate: £108.55
  • Standard Rate: £72.65

Mobility Component:

  • Enhanced Rate: £75.75
  • Standard Rate: £28.70

How Much Have PIP Rates Increased in 2024?

The 6.7% increase in PIP rates means the following weekly increases:

  • Enhanced Daily Living Component: £6.80
  • Standard Daily Living Component: £4.55
  • Enhanced Mobility Component: £4.75
  • Standard Mobility Component: £1.80

Eligibility for PIP

To be eligible for PIP, you need to:

  • Be aged 16 or over and under State Pension age.
  • Have a health condition or disability that affects your daily life or mobility.
  • Have had these difficulties for at least 3 months and expect them to continue for at least another 9 months (unless you are terminally ill with six months or less to live).

Common conditions that may qualify include difficulties with personal care (like preparing meals, personal hygiene, dressing, and medication management) or mobility.

How to Apply for PIP

  1. Initial Call: Contact the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) at 0800 917 2222. You can have someone else call on your behalf, but you must be present during the call.
  2. Application Form: The DWP will send you a form to complete.
  3. Assessment: Attend an assessment, which could be in person or online. Your health or social care worker may also provide additional information.
  4. Scoring: Based on the assessment, you’ll be given a score to determine your eligibility and the amount of PIP you will receive. This score will be detailed in a letter informing you of the decision.

The Benefit Cap

The Benefit Cap limits the total amount of benefits you can receive if you are of working age. It increased by 10.1% in April 2023 but did not increase again in April 2024. The cap varies based on your location and personal circumstances:

Outside of London:

  • Couples or single parents with dependent children: £22,020 per year
  • Single adults without children: £14,753 per year

Greater London:

  • Couples or single parents with dependent children: £25,323 per year
  • Single adults without children: £16,967 per year

Several other benefits also increased by 6.7% for 2024/2025:

      • Middle Rate: £72.65
